Cartografia resistente at GKN

CartografiaResistente, a bottom-up critical geography laboratory we contributed to animate twenty years ago, is being reactivated in conjunction with the adventures of the Biomechanical Venus. The sculpture is a traveling emblem of social struggles in Florence, recently landed at the GKN factory, which is self-managed by its workers in struggle. On May 11th, CartografiaResistente will organise and urban derìve around the factory and a workshop to map initiatives and conflicts in the Florentine area, with the aim to facilitate the self-representation and networking of urban movements.

Il laboratorio di cartografia dal basso è il primo di una nuova serie che inizia al presidio dei lavoratori in lotta della fabbrica GKN di Campi Bisenzio e approderà alla tre giorni che celebra i 25 anni dell’esperienza del Cecco Rivolta. L’intento è quello di ridisegnare una mappa dei territori in agitazione e delle iniziative di auto organizzazione della metropoli sommersa di Firenze, visitando in concomitanza con il tour della Venere Biomeccanica una serie di luoghi nevralgici dell’attivismo locale. Allo stesso tempo, il fine è anche di esplorare con la pratica della deriva i territori che li circondano, le relazioni che li sostengono, e le reti che si dispiegano a connettere le battaglie specifiche in movimenti più ampi ed ambiziosi. L’esperimento di Campi verrà ripetuto a Mondeggi, al Cecco, e potenzialmente in altri luoghi, in connessione materiale o virtuale con il tour della Venere. L’idea è di rilanciare il processo di mappatura dal basso già tentato da CR venti anni fa, ma che sta emergendo come una esigenza diffusa in vari contesti, e che si riallaccia anche ad una serie di processi di mappatura tentati in anni recenti (Criticity, Salviamo Firenze).

Il laboratorio è strutturato in due fasi: 

• la prima è una esplorazione del territorio che circonda la realtà analizzata (2h circa 9.30- 11.30 am). La modalità per generare il percorso verra stabilita di volta in volta, con l’obbiettivo di portare alla luce le  diverse forme territoriali, gli assemblaggi sociali, i nodi infrastrutturali, i panorami culturali e visuali e le reti di relazioni in cui ogni esperienza di resistenza ha luogo e prende forma. Le partecipanti useranno una varietà di strumenti per riportare la loro osservazione, dal racconto orale e scritto alla fotografia, video, registrazione sonora o quant’altro. Il diario di esplorazione verrà elaborato secondo le modalità già rodate da CR alle origini del laboratorio, in forma di post su no-blogs ma anche di pagina sul sito della Venere. 

• la discussione a caldo della deriva verrà fatta alla GKN nel corso dell’evento organizzato con la Venere (2h, 15.30-17.30). Lo faremo utilizzando una mappa / canvas, con un approccio ispirato alle visual assembly per dare a tutti la possibilità di esprimersi anche in forme non verbali.  Una mappa dinamica, forma embrionale di un atlante fatto di molteplici layers, che insieme al mostrare le operazioni di estrazione capitalista ed alienazione più eclatanti, renda conto delle resistenze che si organizzano, delle connessioni sul territorio ed anche dei livelli di strutturazione più immateriali, che affondano nell’economia delle piattaforme e del controllo sui processi di produzione di immagine. Una mappa che riesca a rendere conto dunque anche degli immaginari, della “logistica della percezione “che è sempre più profondamente all’origine dei meccanismi di controllo della società, a Firenze come ovunque.

Lanceremo l’esperimento alla GKN, nel cuore di una battaglia che ha già connesso Campi Bisenzio con l’immaginario sociale delle lotte sul territorio a livello globale. Lo faremo partendo dall’intorno della fabbrica, un assemblaggio esemplare di geografie del commercio, dell’ industria e  della logistica, inframmezzata di aree residuali, scorci bucolici, residenza, coltivazioni e rinaturalizzazioni. Lo faremo ricollegando la pratica di cartografiaresistente al percorso della Venere, che si è risvegliata con il sogno di riattivare energie e capacità connettiva sul territorio di Firenze, e proseguiremo seguendola nelle sue peregrinazioni fino ad un primo momento di verifica  in occasione dell’evento del 26-28 Giugno al Cecco Rivolta. 

CartografiaResistente è un laboratorio di geografia critica ed esplorazione psicogeografica nato all’Elettro+ di Firenze nel 2004, ideato da alcuni soggetti che avevano preso parte tra le tante anche alla creazione della Venere Biomeccanica al Meccanotessile. Attivo fino al 2008 realizzando numerose derive pubblicate su un sito completamente autoprodotto, e presentate in una serie di esibizioni (Elettro+ Firenze 2004; Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce, Genoa 2006; Villa Romana, Firenze 2010), si sta  riattivando nella consapevolezza che le pratiche sperimentate venti anni fa siano più che mai necessarie oggi per rivendicare nuove rappresentazioni del territorio che abitiamo.

The grassroots cartography workshop is the first in a new series that begins at the GKN factory occupied by its workers in Campi Bisenzio and will culminate in the three-day event celebrating 25 years of the Cecco Rivolta experience. The intent is to redraw a map of the insurgent territories and self-organization initiatives of Florence’s submerged metropolis, visiting a series of nerve centers of local activism in conjunction with the tour of the Biomechanical Venus. At the same time, the aim is also to explore, through the practice of urban drift, the surrounding territories, the relationships that support them, and the networks that unfold to connect specific struggles into broader and more ambitious movements.The Campi experiment will be repeated in Mondeggi, alle Rose, al Cecco, and potentially in other places, in material or virtual connection with the Venus tour.The idea is to relaunch the bottom-up mapping process already attempted by CR twenty years ago, but which is emerging as a widespread need in various contexts, and which is also connected to a series of mapping processes attempted in recent years (Criticity, Salviamo Firenze).

The laboratory is structured in two phases:

• The first is an exploration of the territory surrounding the analyzed reality (approximately 2 hours, 9.30-11.30 am).The method for generating the route will be established from time to time, with the aim of bringing to light the different territorial forms, social assemblages, infrastructural nodes, cultural and visual landscapes, and the networks of relationships in which each experience of resistance takes place and takes shape.Participants will use a variety of tools to report their observations, from oral and written storytelling to photography, video, sound recording, or anything else.The exploration diary will be developed according to the methods already tested by CR at the origins of the laboratory, also in the form of posts on no-blogs but also as a page on the Venus website.

• The discussion of the drift will take place at GKN during the event organized with Venere (2h, 15:30-17:30). We will do this using a map/canvas, with an approach inspired by visual assembly to give everyone the opportunity to express themselves even in non-verbal forms. A dynamic map, an embryonic form of an atlas made of multiple layers, which, along with showing the most striking operations of capitalist extraction and alienation, accounts for the resistances that are organized, the connections in the territory, and also the more immaterial levels of structuring, which are rooted in the platform economy and the control over image production processes. A map that can also account for the imaginaries, the “logistics of perception” that are increasingly at the root of the mechanisms of societal control, in Florence as everywhere else.

We will launch the experiment at GKN, in the heart of a struggle that has already connected Campi Bisenzio with the imaginary of territorial struggles on a global scale.We will start from the surroundings of the factory, an exemplary assembly of geographies of commerce, industry, and logistics, interspersed with residual areas, bucolic glimpses, residences, cultivations, and re-naturalizations. We will do this by reconnecting the practice of resistant cartography to the path of Venus, who has awakened with the dream of reactivating energies and connective capacities in the territory of Florence, and we will continue by following her in her wanderings until a first moment of verification during the event on June 26-28 at Cecco Rivolta.

CartografiaResistente is a laboratory of critical geography and psychogeographic exploration that originated at Elettro+ in Florence in 2004, conceived by some individuals who had also participated in the creation of the Biomechanical Venus at Meccanotessile. Active until 2008, creating numerous drifts published on a completely self-produced website, and presented in a series of exhibitions (Elettro+ Florence 2004; Museum of Contemporary Art of Villa Croce, Genoa 2006; Villa Romana, Florence 2010), it is being reactivated with the awareness that the practices experimented with twenty years ago are more necessary than ever today to reclaim new representations of the territory we inhabit.
