Cartografia Resistente

An Experience of Participatory Mapping Implementing Open Source Technology

Chapter published in Eckardt et al. (eds.), MEDIACITY: Situations, Practices and Encounters. Berlin: Frank & Timme 2008

The Cartografia Resistente (Resistant Cartography) project, initiated in 2004 in Florence as a laboratory of urban exploration with the aim to develop a psycho- geographical practice of assessment and representation of the city of Florence. Developed from a bottom up, shared and politically committed perspective, it produced different, antagonist visions for the city: a city increasingly affected by a global capitalist economy, victim of overwhelming fluxes connected to tourism economy, and pathologically crystallized as a profitable cultural heritage. The final, ambitious objective was the shared construction of an alternative urban atlas of Florence, while developing a specific communication platform accessible to the widest public.

Autorecupero ed autocostruzione dei beni comuni

Recruited as ad hoc expert for the URBACT Civic E-State project, Tesserae senior researcher Lorenzo Tripodi was commissioned to lead a study on the practices of community-led self construction and renovation of buildings (“autorecupero and autocostruzione” ), as practiced in recent decades in Italy. The consequent report presenting the results of this study is published here.
